Simple Objects: A Contemporary Archeological Dig. What do we retain when we lose?

In November 2018, a wildfire struck Butte County, about 90 miles north of Sacramento. The loss was catastrophic and unprecedented. "Simple Objects: An Excavation" is a collaboration between Stephanie Taylor and a woman who lost two adjacent family homes. Together they found objects that survived. Stephanie ponders each as it exists now, transformed and mutilated while her collaborator responds to these simple objects with what she remembers,

This is a story about the process of creating an installation. It’s a story about what we retain when we lose, and how we can move forward with resilience. This might be a story about California.
